The term Tanti is derived from Tant, which means loom. The Tanti community belongs mainly to Bihar, and is weavers by professions. The Tanti brides and groom follow endogamy and the community has a number of totemistic clans. A Tanti bride wears woven silk saris and heavy gold jewellery for the wedding. Earlier, the Tanti brides were into household works only, but these days, the Tanti community also has educated brides, who are into various private and public sector jobs.
