Mumbai has a medley of various cultures and ethnic groups and there are around 19% Muslims in the total population of the city. Since Sunni is biggest of the two branches of Islam with nearly 90% Muslims practicing it worldwide, Mumbai also has a huge majority of Sunni Muslims. Muslims are governed by The Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937 on application of marriage, mehr, inheritance, etc. The oldest Sunni Mumbai communities are Dawoodi Bohras, Khojas and Konkani Muslims.
