Veerashaiva is now called Lingayatism after Vishwaguru Basavanna revived the religion in 12th century and introduced the ‚wearing of Shivalinga‚„. It is a Shaivite denomination in Hinduism and is different from the religion primarily in propounding monotheism. Veerashaivas are known by this name in northern India and as Lingayats in other parts of the country. Lingayat is derived from the word ‚Lingavantha‚„ meaning ‚one who wears Linga‚„ in Kannada. Like Veerashaiva, Lingayats worship Ishtalinga.
