The group of Varshney people belongs to the caste of Vaishyas and is known as Barahseni. They are the progenies of Sri Akrurji Maharaj and are primarily based in Uttar Pradesh. This term was first recorded in the epic, Mahabharata when Arjuna used it for Vasudev Krishna. Varshney has been the community of businessmen and landowners traditionally but can now be found in different professions. Besides Varshni, many people use Gupta as their surname. Mathura is connected culturally to Varshneys.
