Sonars, also known as Swarnkars are the goldsmiths both literally and professionally. It is traditionally the community of goldsmiths but people from Sonar caste are entering different professions today. Sonars are usually divided into two segments- Hindu Sonars and Sikh Sonars- further divided into gotras. Some of the common surnames of Sunars include Shah, Bagga, Babbar, Verma, Seth, Soni, Bhutani and many others.
Sonar matrimonial is apparently based on endogamy and they practice clan exogamy.
