The term Shimpi literally means ‚tailor‚„ and is a caste of those who tailor clothes; divided into Jain, Marathi and Telugu Shimpis. Jain Shimpis belong to the Setval caste; Marathi Shimpis are often Lingayats and Telugu division usually comprises Vaishnavas. With migration of Shimpis to different regions came their mingling with people from other castes. As they learned their language, eating habits and lifestyle; Shimpi matrimonial could also be arranged with people from other communities.
