The term Nadar stands for ‚those who rule the land‚„ in Tamil and is among the prominent castes in Tamil Nadu. They are believed to be the entrepreneurial caste of south India and make up for about 12% population of Tamil Nadu. Nadar is regarded as a powerful community, politically as well as financially. They believe in the faiths of Hinduism, Christianity and Ayyavazhi (another Hindu sect in South India). Their sub castes include Karukkupattaiyathar, Mel-nattar, Nattathi, Kodikal and Kalla.
