Mallah is a Hindu community found mainly in the states of north india like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, etc. The people of this caste are found in Pakistan as well but are Muslims. Mallah is believed to mean ‚motion of moving‚„ in Arabic, like wings of a bird. Mallahs are traditionally the boatmen of north and east India but many are now involved in cultivation. Also known as Mandaji and Machua; Mallahs claim descent from Hindu God Nisadh. The sub-castes of Mallahs are Dhoar, Parbattikurin and Semeri.
