Kumaoni caste derives its name from Kumaon region located in Uttarakhand in northern India. And the name of Kumaon region comes from ‚Kurmanchal‚„, the land of tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Karmavatar. Kumaoni people are settled in the states of Bihar, Assam, UP, Maharashtra, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. It includes all those people who speak in Kumaoni or any of its 20 dialects while some may speak in Hindi as well. Kumaonis adhere to Hinduism as their religion.
