Kashmiri Pandit is the sect of Hindu Brahmins who have originated from the Indian state of Kashmir. They are believed to be the descendants of Proto- Rigvedic people and have surnames like Atal, Bindroo, Bakhshi, Ganju, Kaul, Bhatt, Mattoo, Handu, Shivpuri, etc. Kashmiri Pandits follow the Hindu philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism, the school of Shiva philosophy with origins in Himalayas. Some of their important festivals are Shivaratri, Janmashtmi, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra, Navroz, etc.
