Jatav is believed to be a Kshatriya caste that claims its lineage from Lord Shiva. They are believed to be the survivors of the battle between Brahmins and Kshatriyas in ancient times. Jatav is a sub caste of Chamar community and is found in northern India in the states of Uttar Pradesh (UP), Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Jammu and Kashmir (J & K), Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Hindi, Punjabi, Rajasthani and Braj Bhasha are some of the widely spoken languages by the people of Jatav community.
