Brahmins are divided into Pancha Gauda and Pancha Dravida Brahmins with former belonging to North India and latter to South. Havyaka Brahmins are a sub sect of Hindu Pancha Dravida Brahmins settled in the states of Karnataka and Kerala. Havyaka comes from ‚Havyaga‚„ which includes those who perform Havana and Homa. It may be derived from Haigunda, a place that was inhabited by Havyakas. Havigannada, a dialect of Kannada is the primary language of Havyaka Brahmins though not for all Keraliites.
