Assamese people are often defined as a subgroup of People of Assam. They are also known as Assamese-speaking Indo-Aryans of the Brahmaputra valley. They inhabit a multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic and multi-religious society. They speak languages that belong to three major language groups: Austro-Asiatic, Tibeto-Burman and Indo-Aryan.
Historically, Tai-Ahoms were the dominant ethnic group of Assam but recently, the Assamese language speaking group has been associated with the term "Assamese".
