Anavil Brahmins, the sub caste of Brahmins, get their name from the place called Anaval in the state of Gujarat. Also, it is a combination of ‚Un‚„ and ‚Avil‚„ meaning not dirty or very pure. It thus emphasizes that Anavil Brahmins have always been considered upright people. Anavil Brahmins are divided into different groups with surnames like Desai, Vashi, Naik and Mehta. Unlike other Brahmin communities in India, Anavils do not practice priesthood; they are instead agriculturists and landowners.
