Ezhavas, the largest Malayalee Hindu community in Kerala, are called Thiyya in Malabar region. Malabar in South India lies between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. It is predominantly a Hindu area and Malayalam is the chief language. One of the most progressive communities of the state, Malayalee Hindu Thiyyas was formerly known as Ilavar.
The ceremonies in Malayalee marriages are not elaborate like other Indian weddings but are still impressive and involve lesser religious compulsions.
