Konkani Hindus are found along the Konkan coast from Raigad to Mangalore. Some isolated pockets in Cochin in the state of Kerala and Calicut also have Konkani Hindus.
The Gaud Saraswat Brahmins and the Marathas are the major Hindu Konkani communities. Others include the Karhades, the Bhandaris, the Chitpavan Brahmins, the Daivadnya Brahmins and other castes. Hindu surnames are either derivatives of their profession or are conferred upon them by their Swami or religious head of the community.
