Chasa brides are associated with the Chasa community, who are farmers and the natives of western Orissa. The region was previously known as Kosala. The families of Chasa community are distinguished on gotra or family name. Weddings in Chasa matrimony are arranged according to the vargas. Alliances between members of same varga are prohibited. A Chasa bride is married before she reaches her adolescence. A positive part of the Chasa community is that widow re-marriage and divorce are permitted.
